"Junior was a young male Icelandic orca that was captured (I believe around the same time as Keiko). But although Junior was "for sale" no buyer was found.
Orcas that fail to “adapt” to captive conditions, or otherwise find themselves “surpuls to requirements” are often kept in a back-pen until and unless a buyer can be found. Instead of rehabilitating and letting Junior go home to his family, or even putting him in a sea-pen, Junior was forced to live out the rest of his short life languishing in solitary confinement, without fresh air or daylight, forced to endure the almost constant noise of overhead fans, and in a holding tank that would make even Lolita’s look massive.
Marineland denied his very existence, although he was filmed in the warehouse on at least two occasions.
When he died in the summer of 1994, aged 13 years old, he was reportedly lethargic and psychotic.
Juniors case makes me especially angry, they didn’t just kill that poor orca, they destroyed him, until the poor thing was virtually catatonic. ” — Caroline Cogger

The exotic community are really banding together right now, in honour of Vader, and I’m so proud of everyone. As a bit of a step up, I have emailed Ellen Degeneres to help us spread Vader’s story so that it doesn’t happen to anyone else. I am just one person though, so without help, it may not be heard. I have written up a short piece and emailed it to her. Anyone who loved Vader and was disgusted by how he and his mum was treated, I urge you to email as well. As some of you might know, Tara has been slammed by local newspaper and TV reports that only tell one side of the story. This may not work, and it may not be much, but it’s a step to get her side heard by one of the most influential women in Hollywood.
I added the photo of Vader that I’ve included in this post, but I feel like if everyone adds one, whichever one they like, they will see how amazing he was. In the subject, I added the following:
"This is Vader the silver fox, and with 10,000 fans on Tumblr, he is what you would call Tumblr famous. On the 20th of February, Minot (ND) police illegally entered his owner’s (Tara and Eric) home to seize Vader, on the basis of an anonymous tip that someone had been bitten by Vader. This comes after his owner got an anonymous threat by someone that said they would claim he bit them. Despite his owner’s offering to put him in the travel crate, police cornered Vader and grabbed him around the neck, ultimately signing his death sentence when Vader bit the police officer’s glove. There has been no proof of the initial bite, and no proof the officer’s glove had been pierced. The next day, police showed up again at Tara’s doorstep and handed her Vader’s collar with a smirk on his face. Vader was killed.
The police are now covering up the story with numerous changes to the police report, even after admitting that the police officer handled situation badly, and an apology was issued by the DoH to Tara and Eric. Other sources are slamming his owners based off the police report alone, without getting their side of the story. Tara deserves to have Vader’s story heard.
Vader has never shown any aggression. He was the light of his owner’s, and many others, life.
The exotic pet community, as well as all Vader’s fans are in despair and outrage that this occurred. We as a force are appealing to you, Ellen, to get Tara and Vader’s story widespread. No one deserves to have their baby taken off them like this, and Tara at least deserved a chance to say goodbye to Vader. Vader was a perfect example of a well raised, well cared for exotic pet. Tara herself was an advocate for responsible pet ownership.
Please view the links below, for his Tumblr, and a memorial video for Vader by his mother, Tara.
Tara can be found on facebook under Tara Hiatt, North Dakota, or via Vader’s tumblr. As a fellow animal lover, please help us in our plight.”
You can email her at:
or you can go to the link above and fill out the form. There is a character limit so the above statement won’t fit, but you write your two cents worth in your own words.
I have sent Ellen an email on your behalf … Hope this small effort on my part helps. Good luck and I hope that the truth finally comes out! I am very sorry for your lose!

For Eric and Tera of maythefoxbewithyou
Vader will be missed, but far from forgotten.
This is beautiful.
I didn’t follow Eric and Tera’s blog but when I read what had happened to their poor little Vader it brought tears to my eyes. I can’t believe someone would do that to them and to Vader.
This is a beautiful tribute to Vader. Very well done.
RIP Little one <3 Your mama and papa will never forget you. <3
